A child’s hospitalization affects all members of a family, including healthy brothers and sisters. That is why San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House offers a variety of free education and enrichment programs that help children continue to learn and grow during this challenging time.
Generous grants and donations help keep these programs running year-round. We thank the Melvin Garb Foundation, Cox Charities, and the Norris Foundation for their support.
School Away from School
School Away from School is a partnership with San Diego Unified School District. It is free of charge to families residing at the Ronald McDonald House and is open to children in transitional kindergarten through grade 12. Approximately 100 children annually attend for several days to several months. The School Away from School operates from 8:00am to 2:30pm during the usual school year.
Summer and Holiday Programming
During school vacation periods, the Ronald McDonald House has certified teachers that provide free enrichment programming.
This includes:
- Academic work
- Hands-on science
- Creative arts
- Sports activities
- Field trips to places such as nature centers, cultural centers, and the San Diego Zoo
