Longtime volunteer Janice Miles is one of the first people you’ll meet at San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House. She’s at reception three days a week, greeting visitors, giving tours, and making sure guests have what they need. Her warm and capable demeanor lets families know they’re in good hands.
Connections with volunteers like Janice comfort families who may be feeling isolated and overwhelmed by their child’s health crisis. “There’s a look that comes over a guest’s face when you recognize them from a previous visit,” she says. “They are so happy to see a friendly face.”
Shaving Cream for a Father’s Hugs
Even little things can have a surprising impact. Janice remembers giving a can of shaving cream to a dad whose little girl was afraid of the beard he’d grown after days at the hospital. “He was so happy to be able to shave and hug his daughter again! I think of the person who donated that can of shaving cream. What a difference they made.”
Janice makes a special point of thanking the many volunteers who come to serve meals for families. “It’s more than food. With their smiles, they give moms and dads a little respite from the hospital.” In five years of volunteering here, she’s seen that big medical miracles happen at the hospital.
Here at the House, we have our own little miracles that happen every single day.
