A child’s hospitalization affects all members of a family, including healthy brothers and sisters. That is why San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House offers a variety of free education and enrichment programs that help children continue to learn and grow during this challenging time.
School Away from School
School Away from School is a partnership with San Diego Unified School District. It is free of charge to families residing at the Ronald McDonald House and is open to children grades K-12. Approximately 200 children annually attend for several days to several months. The School Away from School operates from 8:00am to 2:30pm during the usual school year.
Summer and Holiday Programming
During school vacation periods, the Ronald McDonald House has certified teachers that provide free enrichment programming.
- Academic work
- Hands-on science
- Creative arts
- Sports activities
- Field trips to places such as nature centers, cultural centers, and the San Diego Zoo
The Learn and Play Center
The Center’s activities are designed to support the social and emotional well-being of pre-school aged children. It also gives resident parents a chance to visit the hospital without the distraction of their other young children.
The Center is open weekdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm and is staffed by YMCA-contracted teachers and aides.
If you would like to support our education & enrichment programs, we welcome donations. You are welcome to donate online and simply specify that your donation is for “Education Programs” on the donation form.
