Since Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego started our meals program in 2010, we’ve grown from 50,000 to 150,000 meals served each year. Our dishwasher simply couldn’t keep up with this increased volume, and we used paper and plastic dinnerware to make sure families had access to meals that keep them going.
We weren’t happy with the amount of waste, and this summer, we put in place a comprehensive program to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Our Recycling Program
We’ve added new dishwashers and reusable plates, and we’re making it easy for guests to separate recyclable materials from trash. We’re also collecting food waste to be composted by the City of San Diego.
We’ve taken the effort House-wide. Guests and staff have focused on recyling in their rooms and offices as well. All of this has led to fantastic results: we’ve gone from 38 bags of trash per day to just four!
