North House Expansion - Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego

We’ve taken the next step in our efforts to expand care. Several steps, actually–a brief walk down the street, back to our old building!

The North House is a new name for our original Ronald McDonald House, which we said goodbye to in 2009. That’s when we moved to our current 47-room facility, and Rady Children’s Hospital began using the building for overflow offices.

But the need for family lodging near the hospital has grown beyond our capacity. Many families wait two long weeks for a room to be available.

We’re thrilled to be able to open the original Ronald McDonald House to families once more. But first, this 1980s building needed surface improvements, fixtures, and furnishings to make it comfortable for families today. We’ve also got to raise the money to underwrite life-changing stays for families in their time of need.

Homecoming Celebration: July 13, 2017

With the addition of the North House, up to 55 families can now stay with us each night. To honor this momentous occasion, July, 13, 2017 was proclaimed “Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego Day” throughout the county by the Board of Supervisors. Future Aspirations

Eight rooms is a first step, but we need to do more. Our plan is to operate this remodeled North House for up to seven years while solidifying a path for long-term expansion. Our hope is to build a larger facility on this site, or at another location with additional hospital partners.
